    Understanding Today’s Media

We start by looking at how the media operates in the modern world. This includes understanding how stories develop, the role of social media in shaping coverage and the type of relationships organisations can build with journalists. From there, the focus moves to interviews. You’ll learn what to expect, how to respond to different types of questions and strategies for managing challenging moments. The aim is to help you approach each interview with confidence. Next, we work on delivery. You’ll practice presenting your story so that it comes across clearly, confidently and authentically. We also explore ways to manage nerves and stay calm under pressure.

Techniques To Use – Part 1

Preparation is the first step. We work with you to refine your key messages and ensure they are clear, concise and relevant to your audience. Understanding the difference between speaking to a journalist and engaging your audience is crucial, and this forms the foundation of our approach.

    Interview Scenarios

All exercises are based on real issues relevant to your organisation. Interviews are designed to feel realistic, mirroring the types of questions and situations you may face. This helps you think through your responses and control your narrative.

Exercise 1 – Simulated Live Interview

You will take part in a live mock interview, replicating the pressure of a real radio or media conversation.

    Review And Feedback

Afterwards, we go through the recording together. We look at whether your message was clear, whether you handled challenging questions effectively and how well you stayed on point. This feedback is practical and constructive, helping you improve quickly.

Techniques To Use – Part 2

We then focus on crafting short, memorable statements that get your message across, even in limited time or sound bites. You’ll practice delivering these on camera with guidance from our trainers.

    Exercise 2 – One-To-One Camera Interview

Each participant delivers a short statement to the camera. We cover tips for presenting naturally on TV and online, ensuring you feel comfortable and confident in front of the camera.

    Review And Analysis

We watch the recordings together and discuss what worked well, where improvements can be made and how to make your message more effective in future interviews.

    Feedback & Follow-up

At CoComms, support does not end when the session finishes. We will receive recordings of all exercises to review at your own pace. We also provide course notes and access to a library of short guidance videos for ongoing support. If you have questions or would like extra practice before a media appearance, our team is always available on 0121 312 3600. We aim to make sure you feel confident and prepared for every step of the way.
